Jack’s First Week
Well, we did it! We survived the first week of parenthood! Although it has been really hard at times, Jack just brings so much joy to our home! We just can’t get enough of him! he has the sweetest face, a head full of hair, and the most precious expressions I have ever seen! He is a very good baby, only crying when he is hungry or if you are changing his diaper.
Our first day home was last Wednesday. We were anxious to get out of the hospital and relax in the comfort of our home with our new son. Our neighbor helped us out by keeping the dogs for the first week, so it was nice and quiet when we arrived. Jack adjusted quickly to his new home. Sean and I gave him a tour of the house, showing him his room and all of his toys. I was in a lot of pain and not able to get in out of our bed easily, so we set up camp in the living room.
The first week was basically Jack eating (A LOT!), pooping and sleeping. It may sound easy, but it’s not! He is an eating machine. I have nicknamed myself “the milk factory” - haha! When awake, he is very alert and curious of his new surroundings. He also has some mighty little legs! Now I know why it hurt so bad when he was kicking me from inside the womb. This little guy may just be a soccer player! He loves to push up with his legs to scoot himself up more on your shoulder.
Our funniest moment this week was giving Jack a bath for the first time. We were both so nervous and had no idea what we were doing! Not to mention, Jack despises being naked, so he was screaming bloody murder the entire time. HA! Poor little guy! We finally got through it, and I promptly picked up my baby book to look up how to give my baby a bath. I couldn’t believe I had to read about how to give my own child a bath, but they had good advice. The second time, Jack slept through his bath, and it was painless! YAY!
We just had our one week check-up, and the pediatrician was so impressed with our little man. He is very strong! He can lift his head up for short periods of time to look around. He is almost back to his birth weight, which is great. He gained one pound this week and grew over a half inch. His jaundice levels also starting coming down, so we were happy to hear that.
Mom is feeling much better and recovering quickly. Sean has been such an amazing dad and husband! He jumped right in to change diapers, run up and down the stairs to get whatever we needed, and has taken Jack during his naps to let me sleep a little during the day. We’ve spent a lot of time just cuddling with our son. It has been the most amazing bonding time for our new family. We’ve kept Blockbuster in business this week, and our Sunday School class has kept us well fed by bringing us wonderful meals for dinner.
Here are a few pictures of our first week together:
