Jack Slept On His Own!
The first time they placed Jack in my arms at the hospital, all sorts of emotions ran over me. I thought that I never wanted to put him down. He was so tiny, so helpless, and he totally depended on me. I felt an amazing love that I never had felt before, and I wanted to spend every waking moment holding and cuddling my baby. When it came time for Sean and I to sleep after the birth, we placed him in his bassinet, and he screamed! I thought, “Oh no! What do we do?” The only thing I knew to do was to hold him, where he was most comfortable, and from that moment on, Jack slept with me during every nap and every night since. That was until Tuesday evening…
One of my friends had told me about Moms On Call. Two pediatric nurses got together and decided to offer a service to parents who had never had a child before or just needed some help. My friend couldn’t stop talking about them, so I decided to give them a call. I wanted to help Jack learn to sleep on his own. Sean and I had bought a co-sleeper that he never used, and we had a beautiful crib sitting in his room that he wanted no part of. So, I called them and on Tuesday, Laura came out to our house. She taught us how to clip Jack’s nails (scary!!!), how to give him a proper bath without the baby bathtub (which he LOVES!!!), how to get Jack sleeping on his own (it worked!!!), and how to set up a schedule for him that worked for both mom and baby. I’m telling you, it’s the BEST thing I’ve ever done!
I thought we had done a pretty good job figuring how to take care of Jack on our own, but to have a mother of five and a nurse sit down and give me all of these pointers was amazing! Don’t take a class at the hospital on baby care, call Moms On Call!
So, in a matter of two days, Jack is sleeping on his own! As a warning, the first night is ROUGH! He was up and down all night long, and Sean had to keep reminding me that it would get better. But one night of adjustment away from sleeping with me was all it took. Last night, Jack slept from 9:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m., and then after feeding, he slept from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m.! It was a miracle! It was the first night either one of us had slept in four hour stretches, and we both woke up happy and refreshed. He has played so well this morning in between his naps, and I can tell a big difference in both of us. I just wish I hadn’t waited until he was 6 weeks old to take advantage of such a wonderful resource!
