Our First Time Back to Church

May 25th, 2008 by Jenny

Not counting his baby dedication earlier this month, today was our first day back to church since Jack was born. I was very proud of our little man. He was the center of attention for sure! We made it to Sunday School only a few minutes late. Everyone wanted to see Jack and nobody could believe how much he had grown. We settled down into our seats, and all was well. Jack was getting hungry, so I pulled out his bottle and began to feed him. He can be a noisy eater, so I was crossing my fingers we wouldn’t interrupt Justin’s lesson. Most of the way through his bottle, Jack’s little face started turning red, and I knew what was about to happen. HA! And boy did it happen! Jack filled up his diaper in a matter of seconds, and I started to feel something that didn’t quite feel right. When I looked down, he had EXPLODED out of his diaper. Sean threw me the diaper bag, and I sprinted to the bathroom before it got all over both of us.

While I was changing his outfit and diaper, I heard another little sound coming from the bathroom stall near me. I realized it was my friend from Sunday School who was nursing her baby. So, there we were with our little babies gathered in the ladies restroom. HA! We both came to the conclusion that we would be spending a lot of time walking the halls together and hanging out in the bathroom over the next few months.

During church service, Jack was an angel. He fell asleep as soon as he heard the choir start to sing. When he was in my womb, he would always kick and stir when the choir sang and when the pastor started preaching. Sean and I use to always laugh and say how much Jack already loved worship and listening to Pastor Johnny. I guess he felt right at home because he slept throughout the entire service and all the way home.

So, it was a good day for us. It’s important to us that we are at church with Jack. Although taking him places can be exhausting (we’re still adjusting), we want him to be surrounded by all the sights and sounds of where we worship. We know that even as small as he is that he also must feel God’s presence as the choir sings and as Pastor Johnny preaches. As we prayed at his baby dedication, it is both Sean’s and my responsibility to raise him in such a way that he knows about Jesus and the incredible sacrifice he made for all of us. And we pray that one day, hopefully at an early age, that he will call Jesus his Lord and Savior as we both have.

Thinking about it… being parents is such a huge responsibility. To know that God created this life in me, that God safely delivered him to us, and that God entrusts us to raise Jack in such a way that God would be honored through his life - it’s all a little overwhelming. But as I sat in my seat this morning, as I sang “What a Friend We Have in Jesus,” as I looked down at my son, I couldn’t help but have a tear in my eye. What a blessing God has given us! And it was indeed a good day to have the opportunity to praise and worship the One who has given us that very blessing!
